Bubwith Militia Lists: 1763-1781

The parish of Bubwith lay within the Holme Beacon division of Harthill Wapentake in the East Riding. The Militia Lists for this division are held at the East Riding Record Office in Beverley, under reference LT/7/8. The Lists cover the period 1762 to 1831, but on my last visit I only had time to check the Lists from 1762 to 1781.

What was immediately noticeable was the very small number of those on the list who actually served, most were substituted, and the substitutes were mainly from the West Riding.

1763*
Only 1 served, the other 29 were substituted. No-one on the list was from Bubwith

1766
Only 2 served, the other 36 were substituted. No-one on the list was from Bubwith

1769
Only 2 served, the other 26 were substituted.
George Blanshard of Bubwith was substituted by George Morris of Halifax.

1772
Only 1 served, the other 30 were substituted.
The one who served was William Etherington of Spaldington.
George Fletcher was substitute by David Prenaro of Bubwith

1778
William Watson was substituted by R. Bernard of Bubwith

1781
Only 4 served, the other 30 were substituted.
One of those serving was Robert Gibson of Bubwith.
